"AMR truly understands how a non-profit and volunteer organization should function, so our dedicated staff excels at helping us pull together at the task force and committee levels, organize our thoughts and spark action at the board level. Making Giving Back Your Business

By Laura Singler-Adams, Account Executive
AMR Management Services

It’s a fact, 72 percent of Americans want to work for companies that support charitable causes (2004 Deloitte & Touche USA LLP).  It’s important to make giving back a priority in any workplace. Fundraising efforts not only benefit the charities and the people they serve, these efforts have an enduring effect on the company and the company employees as well. Corporate fundraising encourages teamwork and strengthens team building skills, boosts company pride and employee retention, often provides a wellness activity for the employees, encourages community involvement in general and infuses fun into the workplace. From senior management to individual team members, everyone in a company can feel good about making a difference by supporting a charitable effort.

Each year, AMR Management Services chooses a primary charitable cause to support through company-wide fundraising efforts. This year, AMR chose to support the American Diabetes Association (ADA) by forming a corporate walk team through the Step Out Walk to Stop Diabetes campaign. To date, AMR employees have raised close to $3,000 for the 2011 ADA campaign, which is quite a feat for a company of just over 30 employees. Primary fundraisers include an internal luncheon and live auction, casual days, flip-flop days, raffles, NCAA bracket contests, bake sales, corporate sponsorship, company t-shirts for the cause and online fundraising.

AMR has supported many charities over the years, including God’s Pantry, the March of Dimes, Toys for Tots, the Hope Center and the Ronald McDonald House, contributing more than $25,000 in funds raised by staff through various efforts, not to mention countless in-kind contributions. We look forward to exceeding our goals in the coming years and raising even more funds for these important causes.

If you or your company are reluctant to get involved in this way, make a goal to give it a try in 2012. Find a cause that means something to your employees or shares a common thread with your company. No matter how small the amount raised, it’s more than would have been raised without you and there are so many positive effects that come from getting involved!

Remember, participating in charitable events is great for employee morale by sharing in a positive group experience with a worthwhile outcome, provides an opportunity for creative thinking, leadership, design and execution and is an excellent way to give back to the community.
