Research shows increasingly marked differences between three generations in American Society; Baby Boomers, Generation X, and Generation Y.
Baby boomers values are idealistic, individualistic, and they were present during civil rights movements and the broadcast era of television. Generation X is described as pragmatic, independent, and distrustful of traditional hierarchy. Generation Y, or millennials, are described as civic-minded, team oriented, and can work within the system.
With such differences, what is the potential impact on associations? Will a more mindful approach to diversity in member retention, recruitment, and governance be critical to survival? Post your comments now.
Definitely a heightened awareness of the diverse generations is necessary to sustain or grow a membership base. Membership must have value to all generations of members. If not, a negative impact would be membership decline and/or interest. Certainly an awareness is important in recrutiment as well. The different generations have different expectations.
I would be interested to see any other comments on the impact this might have on governance issues.
