Newsweek Magazine recently released a ranking of the greenest companies in America. This list, comprised of America’s 500 largest publicly-traded companies, is the first of its kind and illustrates a new wave of corporate social responsibility. Newsweek, in conjunction with 3 of the largest environmental research firms based their rankings on various measurements including: greenhouse gas emissions, toxic waste emissions, the company’s use of other natural resources, and the results of surveying CEO’s, CSR officers, and media.
As associations, we are not exempt from this trend of conducting our business in a social responsible and eco-friendly manner. From making simple changes such as establishing recycling containers in your office, to making substantial movements like PNC Financial Services Groups’ Green Wall, we are all given a call to action to improve our operations for the good of our environment and community.
At the AMR offices we have implemented several courses of action to uphold our responsibility to our clients, society, and the environment, including establishing an AMR Green Team that oversees our green efforts and has implemented things like a recycling program in our office and the elimination of Styrofoam cups and plates.
In the spring of 2008, ASAE and the Center through the Global Summit for Social Responsibility release the Global Principles for Associations in Social Responsibility, the goal of which is to allow association to determine “our destiny as a professional sector with a unique role to play in the global problem-solving arena.” AMR has adopted these principles with the belief that upholding these guidelines will enable us to be more effective and contribute on a higher level to our industry and community.
What is your destiny in the arena of social responsibility? How has your association encouraged members to take initiative in this global movement?
